The pattern book of hair, drawn to measure

Straight · wavy · curly · coily

Which pattern is your hair?

Four questions about how your hair actually behaves, scored against the numbered 1-4 system. A hair type quiz that answers "what is my hair type" with the whole point spread, not just a label.

Four observations, four families

The quiz puts four observations to you about how your hair behaves, and your answers score the four families of the numbered 1-4 system: type 1 is straight, type 2 wavy, type 3 curly, type 4 coily. Inside each family the letters a, b and c encode increasing tightness of the pattern — a is the loosest, widest version, c the tightest and smallest in diameter.

What the result actually shows

You do not just get handed a label. The result screen shows the full point spread across all four families, so you can see how decisively your answers landed where they did. And when two families finish close together, the quiz says so plainly and calls it a boundary. Many heads genuinely carry two patterns, and a result that pretends otherwise is not worth having.

About the drawn strands

Every strand you will see on this site is generated from wave geometry, then measured back against the system’s own ordering before it ships. That is the point of drawing rather than photographing: a 2b sits between a 2a and a 2c on the page exactly as it does in the system.

One thing worth saying up front

A type is a description of geometry, nothing more. No family is a better result than another, and no letter within a family outranks its neighbours. If you have ever asked “what hair type am I” and wanted a straight answer with its working shown, that is the whole job of this page.
