A hair-type reference on the numbered 1-4 system, drawn from wave geometry and written twice before a single strand shipped.
Where the system comes from
The numbered families – 1 straight, 2 wavy, 3 curly, 4 coily, each with a to c running
tighter – are the classification hairdressers actually use. The conventions on every page
were written twice, independently, and compared field by field: all thirty-seven survived,
which says less about us and more about how settled this system is. What is NOT settled is
also on the pages: the system’s own critics, the drift between 1c and 2a, and the float
test for porosity, which both writings independently flagged as popular but unreliable.
The strands are geometry
Every strand drawing is generated from wave mathematics – amplitude for the 2-series,
loop diameter for the 3-series, reversal count for the 4-series – and each one was measured
back before shipping: 2a really is looser than 2c, 3c loops really are smaller than 3a’s,
and every type-4 strand turns more often than any type-3. A drawing that contradicted the
system’s own ordering would have failed the build.
